It's fun and satisfying to design and then make simple itemsthat serve some purpose. I find it very rewarding to conjure updesigns out of my imagination and then build them using commontools and cheap or free materials. I've made all kinds ofthings. I've always liked to make gadgets and gizmos that have somefunction, either useful or not so useful. It started with thesimple things that many kids make - slingshots, a simple bow andarrow, a toy boat. Occasionally I made more involved items suchas a canoe and a dune buggy. Then there was the grass hut - feet across, octogonal in shape, and thatched top to bottom witha thick layer of grass. I built it in a remote location, near astipmine filled with water. Hauled the cut grass in a Volkswagon convertible with the top down. Piled the grass highin the back seat. It must have taken a dozen trips back andforth from a nearby hay field.Simple things appeal to me more than costly homemade items. Asmall project lets me pursue an interest without interferingwith other goals. A project with a small amount of time investedseems more like entertainment. Time spent earnestly involved inthe creation of something designed and made with ones owningenuity can be quite enjoyable....
